For the past several years, Georgia has had the most claims on insurance for lightning protection damage, according to State Farm spokesman Justin Tomczak. “This is the third year in a row that Georgia has been ranked number one,” Tomczak said. Florida has the most deaths in the United States per year, as well as the highest strike density, but the state of Georgia beats them by a significant amount. In fact, Florida doesn’t even come up on the list of top 5. Here is State Farms’ list of claims by state for lightning damage:
National Claims Statistics
Nationwide, lightning strikes cost about $674 million in homeowners insurance losses in 2013, down 30.5 percent from 2012, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
From 2007 to 2011, local fire departments across the country responded to an average of 22,600 fires a year that were started by lightning, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
These fires caused an average of $451 million in direct property damage and nine civilian deaths per year, an NFPA analysis shows.
Lightning strikes the Southeast region of the United States the most, which is why you can see these claims stacking up in this area. The reason Georgia is the number one state for claims because of the population. The Atlanta Metro alone has a population of 5.6 million people.
Most of these claims are due to power surges, or lightning strikes going from the ground into a house and overloading a circuit breaker. This can cause damage to TV’s and HVAC units. Some, though, are claims on an entire house that has been burned down.
